One of the most common difficulties we see is where children don’t use their hands to hold on, reach out or protect themselves when they are falling. This can be due to weakness and sensory sensitivity and it’s a vicious circle of not wanting to use their hands which makes it worse. Our focus is building up sensory awareness of their hands and arms. We use patting, brushing, squeezing and touch from hand to shoulder as often as possible. We guide at the arms and place your child in positions they are challenged to have to move their arms or it won’t be comfortable to play. Often we find the use of an intensive block of work can really break a habit to engage a new way of moving. We can use things like arm wraps and bands to provide initial support.
